Mirage Standard Features

Mirage Sea Kayaks have had over 30 years of kayak building experience. We have evolved over this time to stay with the changing trends of paddlers needs and believe we have a solid outfitting of standard features.

If you then combine these features with the many customisable options that are available, a Mirage Sea Kayak can see you through every level of your paddling life.

Unique Mirage integrated power steering system

With a solid footrest platform, combined with the integrated rudder, it improves propulsion, leg drive and offers superior directional control, that enhances paddler performance.

Our integrated power steering system has a long heritage in sea kayaking and is engineered to enhance the performance of the kayak, whether you are a taking your first strokes or you're crossing Bass Strait.

This system is not only very simple to use, it is truly expedition proven to get you safely through the most challenging conditions.

The 583 / 533 Series has a 100% Australian Made reinforced LD footbrace, which allows for a solid connection, for steering and leg drive. It is also self adjusting for a varied leg length.

Unique to the Mirage range is our reliable, efficient and expedition proven integrated rudder system. This is an exceptionally strong and low maintenance system that causes almost no additional drag to the boat.

The sturdy construction is designed to take rough treatment in the water and on land. Each of the different integrated rudders can be removed and replaced within a minute, with the other type of integrated rudder to suit the paddling conditions.

The standard rudder sits approximately 8cm below the keel line of the kayak and the large surface area gives great responsiveness, even in big following seas, surf landings and is ideal for areas where maneuverability is critical.

Flush Rudder

The flush rudder has a tapered bottom edge which sits flush with the keel at the leading edge to approximately 3cm below the keel at the trailing edge of the rudder. The Flush Rudder is ideal for still water paddling or competitive river paddling. Great in weed impacted paddling areas.

Dry Storage

Dry storage compartments – offer superb seaworthiness and secure storage capacity including a conveniently placed day hatch in most models.

Long distance touring requires large storage capacity as well as access to essentials whilst away from the nearest land. The single kayaks have three watertight bulkheads that separate the kayaks into four sections of storage, being forward, cockpit, day-hatch and aft storage.

The day hatch cover, which is offset to one side, can easily be removed on the water for access to food, drink and emergency equipment without the need to go to shore.

Mirage use several different hatches depending on the design:

520, and 730 - Kajak Sport hatches for bow and day hatches, Neoprene gasket with fibreglass (or carbon) cover for the stern hatch.

580 - Aussie Made Rubber hatches for bow and day hatches, Neoprene gasket with fibreglass cover for the stern hatch.

582 - Kajak Sport hatches and rims (25cm - front, 20cm - day and 47cm x 28.5cm - oval).

532 - Kajak Sport hatches and rims (20cm - front, 20cm - day and 47cm x 28.5cm - oval).

583 Freeride - Kajak Sport hatches and rims (rear only 47cm x 28.5cm - oval).

583 Custom Fish and Adventure - Kajak Sport hatches and rims (25cm - front, 20cm - day and 47cm x 28.5cm - oval).

600 - Kajak Sport hatches and rims (25cm - front, 20cm - day and 47cm x 28.5cm - oval). Large fibreglass centre hatch.

Deck Rigging

Full safety reflective perimeter line and functional elastic deck rigging

Mirage Sea Kayaks have strong, large diameter 6mm deck lines around the perimeter for ease of grasping even with cold, wet hands. Our deck lines are a dual density marine grade polyester that has a reflective weave throughout the entire line.

Shockcord is attached fore and aft to retain deck items such as maps and a spare paddle. All lines are held in recessed deck fittings to avoid getting snagged or knocking unwary knuckles and are both Australian made.

We have 'surf' grab-handles on the bow of the 582 and behind the seating position on the 583 series. These covered loops of 6mm cord, hold their shape, are very strong and are easy to grab when you need them most.

Contoured, supportive, ergonomic seat - available in small or standard.

Available in a standard fibreglass or super lightweight IRT in glass or Carbon and now the SilverStorm Foam Seat.

Another advantage of a locally made kayak is the opportunity to have the correct seat size fitted. It is important for a paddler to be “connected” to the kayak and one of the key areas is in a correct fitting seat. Mirage offers a choice of two seat sizes, which fit across the entire Mirage kayak range, to ensure maximum comfort for the paddler at all times.

The Mirage seats are also available in the IRT process or the SilverStorm Foam Seating - you will be able to save about 500 / 600 grams from our standard fibreglass seats.

• Comfort seating arrangement - your time on the water needs not only to be performance based, it needs to be comfortable.

Some paddlers prefer the added comfort of a padded backrest & seat pad. Mirage offers the “Comfort-Combo” consisting of a thermo formed, foam backrest that is fully adjustable, depending on your comfort needs, plus a thermo formed foam seat pad to complete the Mirage ‘Comfort-Combo’ package. The Comfort Combination is INCLUDED in the price of each Mirage Kayak.

The 583 / 533 series have molded seating with a highly refined curvature, that assists in keeping you in a strong paddling position.

You can add the comfort kit back-rest and foam seat padding to these kayaks as well.
